Stretch Marks

Stretch Marks (also called striae) are caused by rapid stretching of the skin that results in tearing of the dermis (below the skin surface). This sudden change damages the collagen and elastin cells that support the skin. The damage heals in the appearance of stretch marks. They can appear as bright red or purple streaks although the colour fades but they never entirely disappear.

Stretch marks can form during pregnancy, puberty, rapid weight gain or rapid muscle development. Other genetic disorders can cause stretch marks due to weakened structure of the skin. Similar to scars, laser treatments can improve their appearance by thickening the skin and repairing the tissue.
